Our project involved photographing and filming the Blade Lifter — the first of its kind to be used in the UK. This specialist equipment was used to transport thirty-six 55-metre-long turbine blades, each delivered by Super Wing Carrier to a transition point 18 km from the wind farm site. The Blade Lifter’s unique ability to tilt blades up to 60° reduced the need for extensive civil engineering — saving both time and cost.
Each blade took approximately four hours to travel from a holding site in Dumfries & Galloway to the Windy Rig Wind Farm site entrance. Our brief was simple — capture outstanding imagery and video footage over two days without interfering with or delaying the convoy (DO NOT get in the way and DO NOT slow the convoy down). We had one chance to get it right — and no room for error.
Meticulous project management was crucial, encompassing detailed risk assessments, location scouting, and logistical planning for the shoot day. We coordinated closely with Collett & Sons, who managed blade transportation in partnership with P. Adams Transport and Police Scotland, who handled road closures. Aerial footage was supported by local specialists AML Aerial, adding a vital dimension to the final visuals.
